Just a friendly little reminder before Tax Day...
Before you try to file your tax return this year:
If you have an adopted child and do not yet have a SS# for that child, you MUST have an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number in order to include that child as a dependent. File form W-7A [Appication for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions] which can be found on http://www.irs.gov, and wait 4-8 weeks to receive your child's #.
So, file now to get your ATIN in time for filing!

Thank you, We didn't get our adoption finalized yet for taxes but didn't know about the w-7a for a dependent!
Congrats on #10! I keep up on your blog and twitter page and rejoice with you and your new family! Thanks again for the heads up.

Also- (if it helps anyone reading...)
We filled for our adopted son's SS# but of course it is going to take weeks to get the card in- delaying our ability to file a return. But if you ask NICELY :), the SS office WILL notify you once a number has been assigned so that you don't have to wait the number of weeks for the physical card to come in the mail. Just FYI!
OH Thanks!!! just called the office yesterday...still havent applied for our daughters ss card...great thought Amy about asking for the number even if the card hasnt come yet! Gotta get this adoption tax credit stuff going. After 4 years...its time to turn in all those receipts I've misplaced!

We got our daughter's SS#, but have come to find out that if you only have guardianship (we adopted from India and that's all they give you- adoption must be fully done Stateside), you have to have been guardians for *6 months* to claim the child as a dependent! And, of course, the tax credit can't be claimed until the adoption has been finalized. So, looks like in 2011 we'll finally be able to see some of our adoption reflected in our taxes. We only stated this all back in 2006! Oh well. :-)
